So I was watching Doctor Who Confidential yesterday
illegally and my dad saw the opening sequence and was like "Ah! Doctor Who! It's about that eccentric doctor who goes around saving the day."
Yes, Doctor Who has been around for decades (no surprises there) but I was mildly surprised coz the only way he'd have known is if he'd watched it on TV all those years ago. And since cable isn't popular to people before the 90s, the television channels were still free-to-air broadcasts.
But again, the surprise wasn't really at Doctor Who being shown here but how they'd shown in on free-to-air channels back in the days and not now. We never have any good, proper British English shows on our local English-speaking free-to-air channels now!!
The only way we can watch Doctor Who (and other brilliant British English shows like Hustle) in Singapore is to first sign up and pay for cable tv, pay for an upgrade for their digital set-top box and then pay another fee for their digital channels package which includes BBC Entertainment and 21 other channels I'll probably never watch.
I just *love* how the world revolves around money. Don't you? =______=
*Edit: Dad also mentioned how me and bro had switched to watching British shows now that the WGA is on strike. But we'd always liked British shows. We just don't get much chance to watch it, is all... T_T
