let's be frank here, celebrities are cheap nowadays. they come a dime a dozen and even within those many dozens, there really ain't much who oozes real star qualities. don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with dreaming of becoming a star. the media is actually counting on all the dreamers out there to feed their families but the extend of which those people will go to reach their dream is a bit too over.
with so many reality tv competitions created to boast ratings, the path to stardom ain't as far and few as compared to many years ago, thus encouraging all sorts of people to try their luck. some might say "i only live once. might as well take a chance...". that's fair and all but please, at least do some homework. the path to stardom might have increased but to stay in the business still need plenty of work. fame and fortune sure sounds tempting when all you see is the glits and glamor of what is presented to you onstage. offstage however, it ain't as pretty. people hounding you wherever you go, invasion of privacy, having to always say the right things (and usually ending up sounding fake and fatuous), false rumors, bad publicities etc. did you know that the percentage of celebrities suffering from chronic depression is very high? the said percentage is especially high in comedians.
let's raise an example. the moment you enter any of those competitions, the whole of singapore will know who you are and will be watching how you will make a fool of yourselves. they will find fault in you, your dressing, your performance, your every gesture. and that will have to continue even after the duration of the competition if you are so fortunate to become famous.
one thing that will definitely help those contestants (who honestly aren't all that great) survive is their thick skin. to be able to subsist in the brutal world of entertainment means to either swallow bitterly or completely disregard all negative feedbacks and ruthless criticism. and we all know how inhumane words can hurt us. you might think you're pretty good with sarcasm but if you ever find yourself feeling offended by unkind remarks, you should reevaluate your criticism threshold, and possibly your future as a public figure. to be able to stand in front of the rest of the world as a celebrity means to be the perfect human specimen. and how many of us can claim to be the perfect human specimen??
point two to take note of before embarking on the journey of hurt and despair is to be 1000% sure that you really want to be famous. if you are only trying out coz you have nothing better to do, please don't even bother. unlike a lousy job, you can't just walk out of it and not have to deal with the consequences. everyone else will cast you in a bad light and you will hafta suffer pointings and whisperings behind your back for as long as the audiences remember you. don't forget, bad news are always more publicized than good news. and if you value you don't mind having your life thrusted under a microscope--nay, nanoscope, go ahead and fulfil your starry dream.
point 3. if your family and friends tell you that you have a great voice, don't ever believe them. family are obligated to make you feel good about yourselves even though you suck while friends are mostly kind and caring and less likely to tell you that your singing sucks. it doesn't help if you think your singing is great either. humans are all narcissistic megalomaniacs, some more than others, but everyone has a bit of it in us. find a trusted friend who will tell you truthfully how lousy you are and where you can improve before you even entertain the notion of entering in a reality tv competition. if you don't have such a friend, come find me. i will not only offer my unbiased options laced with knives and daggers, i will also show you the worse kind of expression a judge can give. all in preparation of your competition. *brilliant smile*
lastly, i would like to say good luck to all potential contestants, all of whom i believe might never read this post. i will have fun watching you humiliate yourselves on tv.
